A Guinea Pig Show is a fun Family Day out for all the Family and where you can bring your Pet and learn more about caring for them and ask questions . We want to share with you how amazing Pet Guinea Pigs are.
WHO JUDGES AT A PET SHOW?
A Pet Show is judged by a New Zealand Cavy Council Qualified Pet Condition Judge. The Judge will have a minimum of 5 years in Cavy Care and will have trained for a minimum of two years to become a Judge.
WHAT THE JUDGE IS LOOKING FOR
1.Good health and condition, cleanliness, free of mites , clipped nails. 2. We are looking to see how you handle your pet and connect with it. 3. We want to hear that you know how to care for your Pet 4. Our Judges think all Guinea Pigs are AMAZING and will not judge on colour or coat type.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO GET YOUR GUINEA PIG READY
You will need to bathe your cavy (Guinea pig) you can use animal shampoo for puppies or kittens , or you can use human shampoo . The most important thing is to rinse out all the shampoo , use warm water and keep the Guinea Pig warm afterwards with towels and dry well.
Before a show you will need clip nails so they won't scratch the judge or yourself, If you don't know how to clip your cavy nails that's okay we love to teach and show you new things.
Grease gland, this is a small gland on the rump of all Guinea Pigs , males produce a lot more grease than females, this area can be easily cleaned and lots of exhibitors have different ways of doing this . a popular method is to dab a small amount of Eucalyptus oil onto the gland with a old toothbrush before bathing to try and remove the grease. The Eucalyptus oil must be removed from the coat . If you have a long hair cavy you will need to make sure there are no knots in there coat and you need to comb your longhair coat before the show and it is a good idea to comb your long hair every few days so it won't get any knot in there beautiful coat. It's best if your cavy is free of parasite if your cavy does have parasite you can use Fido's Flea rinse or Revolution from the vet , please ask Club members for advise if you are unsure, as there are a few different types of parasites cavies can get.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING
A comfortable cage for you cavy with hay and news paper and wood shaving or paper pellets ,As long as your Guinea pig is safe and secure, Cat cages are popular or self built crates .
